Digital punch card apps: 10 features to check before you choose one
Not every punch card app is built for a busy counter. Here is what to check: wallet support, no customer app, stamping speed, staff logins, messaging, analytics and honest pricing.
Searching for a digital punch card app turns up dozens of options, from free widgets to enterprise CRM suites. Most of them were not built for a counter with a queue. Here are the ten things to check, in the order they will matter to you.
1. Does the card live in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet?
If customers must download your app, most never will. A wallet pass uses the app that is already on every phone. Check that the product issues real Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes, not a web page that pretends to be one.
2. How fast is a stamp at the counter?
Count the taps. Scan, confirm, done is the standard. Anything that asks staff to search for a customer by name or phone will slow the morning rush and quietly get abandoned. NFC tap stamping is the fastest option if your counter is busy.
3. Can staff stamp without seeing your data?
Look for sub-user logins. Staff should be able to stamp and redeem from their own phone without access to customer lists, settings or billing. Every action should be logged against the staff member.
4. Can customers join in one scan?
A QR code at the till and a link for social media. The sign-up page should let you choose the fields, and a first-name-only option should be possible.
5. Can you message customers from the card?
The card should be a channel, not just a counter. Push messages to the lock screen, segments by stamp count and location-based messages near your store are what turn a card into repeat visits.
6. What does the reporting actually show?
At minimum: customers enrolled, stamps issued, rewards earned and redeemed, per campaign and per location. Better: a revenue estimate based on your stamp value and reward cost, and CSV export.
7. Does it support several locations on one card?
A stamp earned in one branch should count in another. Check that locations are listed on the card and that activity can be filtered by site.
8. Can one card carry more than one reward?
Salons and spas often want hair, blow-dry and nails on separate rows of the same card. Multi-reward support saves you running three cards and your customer holding three passes.
9. Who owns the data, and where is it kept?
You should own your customer data, be able to export it and delete it, and have a data processing addendum. Ask about encryption and alignment with UAE data protection law.
10. Is pricing honest?
Watch for per-customer pricing that grows as you succeed, setup fees and limits on messages. A flat monthly plan with unlimited customers, a free trial and no credit card to start is the benchmark.
